Wastewater Laboratory - Basics and Essential Analyses

Synopsis

This two-part course provides an introduction to a wastewater laboratory and an overview of analyses commonly performed in a wastewater laboratory.

  • Session 1 includes information on basic safety, instruments & equipment, regulations, method references, sampling, and quality assurance. It also details analysis methods for pH, fecal coliform, and residual chlorine.
  • Session 2 focuses on solids, BOD & CBOD, ammonia, and phosphorus. When there is more than one choice for an analysis method, multiple options, including test kits, will be discussed.

The presentation will discuss the theory behind commonly performed analyses. It will also include sample calculations, with detailed explanations of the math involved.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • This webinar is an update of the presenter's 2022 Essential Wastewater Series. Updates were based on operator input and include more focus on how to choose methods, more information on basic lab equipment and techniques, and more analytical options.
  • The goal is to customize this presentation to the needs of the attendees. Please help us with this task by completing a short survey that you will receive after you register for the course.

Learning Objectives

Completion of the course will provide attendees with a basic understanding of sampling, reference methods, quality control, and safety. For each analysis discussed, attendees will know:

  • Wastewater program requirements;
  • What the analysis measures and how operators may use analysis results;
  • How to perform the method;
  • Associated quality control;
  • Tips for optimal performance;
  • Calculations associated with the method;
  • Common issues with method performance and troubleshooting tips
